Be Prepared for Common Online Learning Problems


Online education is the wave of the future and more and more people are taking advantage of the relative ease and cost effective means of obtaining a degree or taking a course of interest to them. While the advantages are many, there are some pitfalls that must be avoided if possible – and careful research will ensure that you don’t fall into those pitfalls.

Research is the key to making the most of your online education experience but even that has limitations if the program is not well thought out and planned and the curriculum all that it is said to be. It is therefore important to ensure that the college or university where the program is offered is accredited and that the faculty takes in to consideration how well the curriculum will translate online as opposed to being taught in a classroom.

 Some courses or subjects will not be presentable online – such as sports or public speaking or surgery – these types of subjects need the personal interaction to be effective. However, some aspects of the program can probably be done online, but most of it should be done on campus.  Larger groups are more effective online because you don’t have the interruptions that can occur in a large classroom where synergy is important.

The instructors or professors who administer the online programs must be properly trained to facilitate the program effectively. Often a college or university thinks that they can hire someone for less money that has not had the experience to teach the online program. The methodology and delivery are extremely vital for an online program to be successful. This is a big mistake that can affect the quality of the program and the students suffer because of that.

It is essential that the online instructor be able to encourage online participation in the virtual classroom the same way that they would in a normal classroom. Without that key element, the participation would be limited thereby limiting the quality and alienating or distancing the students further.

The online program must also be user friendly so that students are not bogged down with trying to figure out how to master navigation on the program instead of concentrating on learning what is being offered. Therefore the technology must be reliable so that there are not constant interruptions due to server crashes and other problems.  Some students also might have limited computer knowledge making it all the more important for the technology to be user friendly.

Some students also might have limited access to a computer which is another problem that schools face – either because of where they live or because of the cost of being online for any length of time prohibits their usage. Some areas have more limited access to the internet such as rural areas than students who live in urban environments.  The onus is also on the student to be more responsible about study habits, about following through on assignments and general practices if their tendency is to be more relaxed or lazy about getting an education.
