CCAT 8 and 9 Sentence Completion: Free Canadian Practice & PDFs

Is your child sitting in class, already finished their work, while the rest of the room is still on page one? In Canada, the gap between a “bright student” and a “bored student” is often just one test score. Unlike American test prep apps that rely on rote vocabulary memorization, the CCAT sentence completion subtest evaluates a child’s structural reasoning and logical deduction within a Canadian spelling context.

The CCAT Sentence Completion subtest is the primary gatekeeper for Canadian Gifted & Talented Programming. If a student misses a provincial school board gifted cutoff by even a single point, most Canadian districts enforce a mandatory two-year re-test waiting period.  That’s two years of lost potential.

Don’t leave it to chance. Whether you need a CCAT 2 Sentence Completion PDF for home study or a full CCAT Level 9 Online Course, we provide the logic-based tools to help your child walk into that testing centre with confidence. We don’t just teach them to guess; we teach them to think like the test.

What is the CCAT Sentence Completion Subtest?” followed immediately by a tight definition block answering the 5 Ws:

Who: Grade 2 (Level 8) and Grade 3 (Level 9) students across Canadian school boards.

What: A verbal reasoning test where students listen to or read a sentence with a missing word and select the logical fit.

When: Administered during school board gifted and talented screening windows.

Why: To measure verbal logic and context deduction rather than memorized vocabulary.

Understanding CCAT Levels 8 and 9: What the Terminology Means

If you’re looking at school board testing notices, the alphabet soup of standardized testing can feel a bit mysterious. To help you decode what your child is actually sitting for, here is how the nomenclature breaks down:

CCAT Level 8 (Grade 2 Assessment): Administered by educational psychologists and school boards using materials published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), Level 8 is the standard cognitive screening tool for 7- and 8-year-olds. It evaluates how a child thinks, reasons, and solves problems using symbols, numbers, and words rather than testing memorized school curriculum.

CCAT Level 9 (Grade 3 Assessment):
Stepping up to Level 9 introduces slightly higher lexical and structural complexity for 8- and 9-year-olds. It serves alongside the Inview test as a primary metric for identifying exceptional academic potential and placement into Gifted and Talented Programming.

The Sentence Completion Subtest: Within these levels, the verbal reasoning section relies heavily on sentence completion. This task measures a student’s grasp of verbal reasoning—specifically, how well they deduce meaning, understand word relationships, and apply logic within everyday linguistic contexts.

Questions for Grade 2 and 3 (Fill in the Blank)

The examiner or proctor will read out a sentence with one missing word. Candidates must listen to determine what the sentence is trying to communicate, then select the best answer from the options given. For CCAT Levels 8 and 9 (Grades 2 and 3), students are given a tight timeframe across dozens of questions, making 2-minute pacing drills essential for reducing test-day anxiety.

CCAT Grade 2 test tips

The best tip for any test is – Start early and Practice!

Encourage your child not to skip questions that seem hard. Many candidates fall for the temptation to skip questions that seem difficult. Let your child answer these questions with an answer that comes to mind. After finishing the rest of the questions, they can come back and see if they had a different answer in mind.

Train your child on proper use of the extra rough papers provided. Many schools allow candidates to use rough paper during the test. If your child finds a question challenging, let them break it down in steps to handle it better. They can also note down ideas that can help them solve questions that come later in the test.

Frequently Asked Questions: CCAT Grades 2 & 3 Sentence Completion
What actually happens during the Sentence Completion section? The proctor reads a sentence aloud that is missing a word. Your child listens closely, figures out what the sentence is trying to say, and picks the best missing word from a multiple-choice list. It tests vocabulary, logic, and how words fit together in everyday contexts.
Is this test about memory or thinking? It’s definitely about thinking. Big Prep loves to sell flashcards for endless memorization, but the CCAT is a reasoning test. We help kids spot patterns and deduce meaning from context rather than just cramming definitions.
Why is everyone making such a big deal out of Grades 2 and 3? This is usually the window for Gifted and Talented programs. Missing the cutoff by a point or two often triggers a mandatory multi-year wait period. Getting familiar with the format early takes away the test-day surprise.
Should my child skip hard questions and come back? Don’t get bogged down! Take a best guess based on what sounds right, and keep moving. If there’s time left at the end, they can flip back. Never leave a blank circle—always put something down.
Can they use scrap paper? Most schools allow rough paper. Encourage your child to use it if a question feels tangled up. Breaking things down step-by-step or jotting down quick thoughts helps clear mental clutter.
How can I practice this at home without burning my kid out? Keep it light! Work through a few questions together over a snack using our PDF downloads or online courses. If they miss one, just talk through why another word fits better.
