COOP Transition
Important Note for Test Takers & Parents
The COOP Exam Has Transitioned to the HSPT
A quick note on the COOP Transition: What you need to know
If you’ve landed here looking for the “COOP” exam, you aren’t alone. I hear from folks every day who are still searching for those specific materials. But here is the plain truth, straight from my desk to yours: the old COOP exam as we knew it has folded its tent.
These days, the Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Newark, the Diocese of Paterson, and surrounding areas have officially moved over to the High School Placement Test (HSPT).
Everyone still calls it the “COOP” at the dinner table. It’s like how we still call that local park by its name from thirty years ago, even though the sign out front says something else now. But when it comes to test day, the distinction matters. If you spend your late nights studying legacy COOP formats, you’re going to be fighting an uphill battle against a test that doesn’t exist anymore.
What this means for your student:
We need to shift our focus to the HSPT framework. That means centering our practice on Verbal and Quantitative Skills, Reading, Mathematics, and Language (plus that Science section, if your specific school requires it).
We’ve moved away from the old formats to ensure our practice tests aren’t just “close enough”—they’re the real deal.
If you’re ready to start, I’ve put together a fully revised HSPT Guide/Material PDF. It’s built to match the current assessment, so you can walk into that testing room with your head held high, knowing you’re practicing for the right test.
Let’s get your student ready to show what they’re capable of.
