When you are aiming for a spot in a municipal fire hall across Ontario—whether it’s Toronto, Ottawa, Brampton, or Kitchener—your journey starts at a proctored computer lab (often down at the Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute, or FESTI, in Mississauga).
The OFAI Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT) is a single-sitting, 3-hour exam consisting of 110 multiple-choice questions. It isn’t a normal academic test; it’s a high-stakes screening tool where the character section carries the heaviest weight. The overall score splits down into two distinct measures: 45% General Aptitude and 55% Personal Characteristics.

- The Focus: Professional clarity. Firefighters write legal documents, incident sheets, and medical reports; accuracy counts.

- Grammar & Sentence Structure: Choosing the grammatically correct option among four confusing distractors.

Key Exam Logistics to Remember
- Result Format: Pass/Fail only. You will not receive a numeric score.
- Validity: A passing certificate is valid for 24 months and is accepted by over 100 participating Ontario fire services.
- Retake Rules: If you fail the first time, there is a mandatory 15-day waiting period. Subsequent failures require a 30-day wait before you can book another attempt.
