2-Minute Challenge: Anatomy of a Trap Question

If you are taking a Canadian exam—whether it is for a trades apprenticeship, the military, or going back to school—you will run into questions designed specifically to make you stumble. The big test-makers don’t just test your math; they test whether you are rushing.

Let’s look at a classic trap. Grab a piece of scrap paper and give this a try:

The Question A local hardware store puts a $100 pair of work boots on sale for 20% off. A week later, they reduce the new sale price by another 10%. What is the final price of the boots?

[ A ] $70 [ B ] $72 [ C ] $80 [ D ] $110

The Breakdown: How to Spot the Trick

The Trap (Choice A) This is exactly what the test-makers want you to choose. When you are stressed and watching the clock, your brain wants to take a shortcut. It sees “20% off” and “10% off” and simply adds them together for a 30% total discount. 30% off $100 is $70. The corporate test writers know people will do this, so they put $70 right at the top to catch you rushing.

The Answer (Choice B) To beat the test, just take it one step at a time at the kitchen table.

Step One: 20% off the original $100 makes the boots $80.
Step Two: The second discount is 10% off the new price ($80). 10% of $80 is $8.
Step Three: Subtract that $8 from the $80, and your final price is $72.

The Takeaway Whenever you see a multi-step math problem, Big Prep almost always includes a trap answer for folks who try to combine the steps in their head. Slow down, use your pencil, and take the problem one piece at a time. You’ve got this.

Government & Public Service

Public Service Entrance Exam The is the most common Canadian public service exam. This is a general aptitude test which includes, reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills. It is often used as a screening tool for entry-level positions in the federal public service. PSEE Information

Second Language Evaluation This test assesses an individual’s proficiency in their second language (usually French or English), which is a requirement for many federal public service positions. SLE (English)

Canadian Border Services – The Canadian Border Services Agency uses and aptitude test, the Officer Trainee Entrance Exam (OTEE). The OTEE exam includes three sections, Reasoning, Writing and Analytical thinking CBSA OTEE Services Frontaliers Canadiens

Canada Revenue Agency – The tests conducted by the CRA vary depending on the position, but are typically standardized tests and competency-based situational questionnaires such as the CRA Situational Judgement test. Canadian Citizenship – Becoming a Canadian Permanent Resident
The Canadian Citizenship Test is administered by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. One of the requirements to become a Canadian citizen is to take and pass this test. The test is designed to measure your general knowledge about Canada and the ways of living in Canada.

CELPIP –
The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program® is a test designed to assess the proficiency in the domain of English language. It is managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The CELPIP® is given to individuals applying for the Canadian citizenship, to prove their ability to function in English.

CAEL – The CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language) test is designed to measure your command of Canadian English, at the academic level. The test is administered by Paragon Testing.

Around 185 Canadian universities and colleges consider the CAEL as proof of English language proficiency at academic level, and accept it for their admission program.
